Philly always has a big July 4 festival, but since the GOPs discovered us in 1999, it's been getting more GOPpy. This year, the Park Service opened the new National Constitution Center, a $135 Million corporate funded multimedia museum "celebrating" the Constitution. It's on Independence Mall, along with Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Of course, the whole Con Center sells the idea that we still have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights. (a very few of the required tickets were made available for ordinary citizens to attend the ceremony where a "Liberty Medal" was awarded to Sandra Day O'Connor. Previous winners were folk like Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter.) Sunoco sponsored the event.

The Rally and March were sponsored by a network of local activist groups to counter the Con show. None of us at the march heard about it, but apparently while we were blocks away, the dignitaries at the "official" Center Celebration tried to cut a ribbon or something and managed to pull down a scaffolding on themselves. Some politicans went to the hospital. I only heard about it hours later.

The pictures are all the useful stills I took. Mostly, I was shooting video. The video probably tells a more complete story, but it'll be a while til I get it into presentable form.

I really can't guess at numbers for the Rally and March. Probably somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000.
